A system approaching the end of its expected life that requires a significant repair — a compressor, a heat exchanger, a refrigerant-related component — is a different financial decision than the same repair on a newer system.

A rough rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds roughly half the cost of replacement, and the system is near or beyond its typical lifespan, replacement is often the better investment. A new system also carries a warranty, improved efficiency ratings, and a reset of the maintenance clock.
